About this Item

Small 8vo. Grey cloth with gilt lettering. viii, 513pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, decorative endpapers. Very good. Mild binding edgewear, with spine slightly sunned; title page hinge expertly and archivally strengthened with discreet contemporary paper strip. A tight and attractive first edition of this collection of the writings of this German physician, politician and diplomat (1825-1911) whose activism caused him to flee Germany in 1849 and come to America, where he spent more time politicking and diplomatting than in practicing medicine. Florer signs the title page boldly and in full in black ink. Other than a thumbnail biography, foreword and lengthy introduction all of Kiefer's writings (which include poems) are in German.
