About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Tucker, Dennis C.

From Library Journal:

If your library needs to move its collection due to new construction or remodeling, this revision of Tucker's From Here to There: Moving a Library (Wyndham Hall, 1987) will be helpful. Even before the actual move, careful planning is required. The first and most important action Tucker advocates is appointing a move director who will have the authority for all aspects of the move. Once that has been done, the steps for planning a move are carefully outlined: weeding, planning for expansion, cleaning, deciding whether or not to fumigate and/or deacidify books, and setting an actual date. The author discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the many methods for moving collections, including moving loose books, putting books on trucks, moving collections on trays or troughs, putting items in boxes, and whether or not to use vehicles. Tucker also considers helpers, from using volunteers to paying professional movers. Pitfalls and pluses for each are laid out. The author is careful to consider the size and type of the building, and, throughout, anecdotes of actual library moves demonstrate methods used in the text. Tucker's guide has practical, down-to-earth information and differs from Elizabeth Habich's Moving Library Collections (Professional Media, LJ 9/1/98), which contains more technical details and is helpful for large libraries. Both should be used together when moving medium and large libraries of all types.
