About this Item

Quarto. 158 (2)pp. Original illustrated brown dustjacket over tan paper-covered boards with stamped brown illustration and lettering on cover and spine. Umber endpapers. Frontispiece drawing of Rune Gate. Rune alphabet and Germanic names of months on verso of frontispiece. Illustrated with reproductions of b/w artwork of mythical symbols and places preceding each chapter. Content includes articles on history and old and new religions. This 1919 edition of the Volkserzieher (people's educator), publishing sources of old Germanic writings and customs, still carries the Swastika as a symbol. It was abandoned after Schwaner's public commitment to the Weimar Republik in the Volkserzieher in 1926. Schwaner had become friends with Walther Rathenau, Foreign Minister of Germany during the Weimar Republik, in 1913. Rathenau supported Schwaner in his endeavors, including financial help. When Rathenau was assassinated by the Organization Consul (O.C.) in June of 1922 it caused tremendous hardship for Schwaner and he became more and more critical of the National Socialists though he managed to continue publishing through 1936, three years after the Nazis had taken over power. Eventually the Volkserzieher was forbidden in 1936 and its assets were confiscated but released again in 1937. Schwaner continued send out newsletters until 1940. Text in German, Gothic script. DJ with some wear along edges. Binding lightly bumped. Minor stain on front endpaper. Book block age-toned. DJ, binding and interior in overall good+ to very good condition. Fourth completely revised and expanded edition. Bookseller Inventory # 35421
