About this Item
Uncolored engraved portrait of Grant, taken from a Mathew Brady photograph. Mild foxing, very light staining, and wear, particularly at the edges. The elaborate border, designed by W. Momberger, depicts the Siege of Vicksburg and battle of Fort Donelson. The top of the border encompasses patriotic themes, with an eagle at the top and opposing conceptions of Lady Liberty at the corners, with one designated as Loyalty, the other Treason. This was one of a small series of fine portraits of Union Civil War leaders published shortly after the war which also included Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Sherman, Sheridan, Farragut and George Thomas. See Stauffer p. 38 for further information about Buttre. Seller Inventory # p00001
