Book Description Lee & Walker 186?, Philadelphia. Paperback. Folio. Pictorial wrappers. 5pp, (1p ad). Very good. Lightly age toned, with bottom edge likely slightly trimmed; slim (¼") white modern book tape along margin. Attractive example of this Civil War celebratory march, with front wrapper lithograph depicting a handsome, youthful head-and-shoulders three-quarter portrait of Ulysses S. Grant in uniform. While some sources cite 1862 as the year of publication, this doesn't mesh with the historical record, for Grant held the rank of major general of volunteers in 1862 -- it wasn't until early March 9, 1864 that Grant was commissioned a lieutenant general, making this the likely year of publication. In addition, a decorative scroll hangs down each side of the ornamental border that surrounds Grant's portrait, and many of the battles listed were post-1862.This copy is possibly a later printing, for the small-print copyright line at the bottom of the first music page (p. 3) states, "Entered according to Act of Congress A.D. 186 by Lee & Walker." -- the last digit of the year has dropped out. Since Grant's rank rose to general of the Army (4 stars) in 1866, this sheet music is certainly of 1864-65 vintage. A lovely example with superb front wrapper graphic. Bookseller Inventory # 36942
