Description:

First edition, one of only 975 unnumbered copies. Ribbed brick-colored cloth stamped in black; 174 pps. Scarce history of Mexican bandit Joaquin Murrieta whose depredations terrorized California and Northern Mexico in the Gold Rush period of the 1840s and 50s. The biographer presents the outlaw as a somewhat sympathetic figure with some Robin Hood elements, driven to a life of crime by the lynching of his brother and killing of his wife. A fine, tight, fresh copy in the rare brown paper dust wrapper, illustrated on the front with a woodcut otherwise blank. The jacket has been repaired around the edges with clear tape. Book Description The Charles T. Power Co., Chicago, 1937. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. This book is the 1937 reprint of the 1925 first English translation of a novel by the Mexican author Ireneo Paz. The true first edition of Paz's novel came out in 1904 in Spanish. Ireneo Paz (1836-1924) was the father of Nobel Prize winning writer Octavio Paz. Ireneo Paz did not invent this story. He plagiarized it from a San Francisco newspaper called The Police Gazette which in turn plagiarized it from the novelist and newspaper reporter John Rolland Ridge. Ridge was a Cherokee and his novel, published in 1854, is believed to be one of the first novels published by a Native American. Ridge's novel has the exact same title as this one - Paz or his translator didn't bother to change even one word of Ridge's original title. Ridge's book became wildly popular and plagiarized with many people believing it to be a true story. The story became the basis for Zorro. Book's spine slightly slanted. Pages age tanned. Dust jacket made from thick paper with a texture that was probably meant to imitate leather. Dampstaining to bottom of jacket spine panel. Dust jacket now protected in Mylar. Ships same or next business day. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 174 pages. Seller Inventory # 72317
