About this Item

ALDEN, Albert. The Life and Age of Woman. [Barre, MA: Thompson and Alden, c. 1835]. Woodcut, one-sheet, 18 x 21.5 inches. Professionally restored, matted, glazed, in wooden frame overall 27.5 x 30.25 inches. Rare, Worldcat list only two copies and a diligent search reveals only a further two, with no records of auction or sales. A seven-figure image, from a one- year-old infant to a 90-year-old woman, with the 30-year-old on the highest step. The text describes hers as being "at the zenith of her intellecutual and physical powers," the 18-year-old is at "the most critical age in the life of a female . [in] danger of bestowing [her affections] on man unworthily, or in vain" if she does not "first [give] her heart to God." The 50-year-old's "home is her castle" and her "time not spent in providing for her household is devoted to counseling her children, who at this time of her life are ready to go forth into society." Alden's woodcut "The Life and Age of Man" is well-known and based on the classical idea of the seven ages of man, but this image of the seven ages of woman is much less common. Currier and Ives did a version of this theme, copyright by Nathaniel Currier in 1850, showing eleven women form infancy to a centenarian. Bookseller Inventory # 60124
