Jesse O. Thomas was a disciple of Booker T. Washington . Encouraged by Washington and by Theodore Roosevelt, he established the Atlanta Chapter of the Urban League in 1919. He was the first African American to be engaged by the Red Cross in any capacity. In addition to numerous other activities, his home in Atlanta became a gathering place for many prominent figures in the arts and social sciences: Paul Robeson, Roland Hayes, W. E. B.
