Includes a listing of the 1, 255 trees on Boston Common according to the 1851 city engineer's map, 664 of which were American Elms, 49 English Elms, and 1 Slippery Elm, among other species. A history of the Common, followed by Appendices: Pres. Quincy's account, difficulties of Hard College with John Hancock; and Extracts on the English and American Elms; 1910 Map, Boston Common.
