About this Item

Boston and New York, 1902. 8vo, cloth with jacket, 337 + 397 pp. The definitive source on the physician, public hygienist, and abolitionist Henry Ingersoll Bowditch, written and edited by his son Vincent. A very near fine set with a scratch to tops of pages of first volume, else fine. In the uncommon jackets, which are in quite good condition with some chips and closed tears to extremities, particularly to the second volume. An attractive and very well preserved set. "A leading figure in transporting Parisian medical ideas and practices to the United States and a prominent participant in the Massachusetts antislavery movement, Bowditch's most lasting contribution was the impulse he imparted to the American public health movement and especially to promoting the role of the state in preventive medicine." - ANB.
