Two volumes, first editions. Dark brown blindstamped cloth with spines letterd in gilt. 437 (1 pp. ads) and 507 pp. with index. Frontis engraving of Reed as a Revolutionary officer in Vol. I. Biography of Founding Father Joseph Reed written by his garndson with numerous selections from his correspondence. Although born in Trenton, New Jersey, he grew up in Pennsylvania and later attended Princeton University (then known as the College of New Jersey), and studied law in London. He establish a law practice in Philadelphia but at the start of the Revolutionary War was asked by Washington to act an an aide-de-camp. He served as a member of the Continental Congress and later as a delegate to the Articles of Confederation convention. Reed became President of Pennsylvania (governor)., hence the title of this work. Both volumes tight with spine lettering bright; minor wear at the spine ends (a bit more at the head of Vol. I). Foxing to endpapers and preliminaries and with occasional foxing in the text. An 1847 review of the book from "The Critic" newspaper is affixed to the first blank in Vol. I. An attractive set. Bookseller Inventory # E8226
