About this Item

No date given on title page; copyright date 1901. Light green cloth hard back volume with gilt lettering the spine: Memoirs of Dan Rice. Gilt facsimile of Rice's writing and signature on the front cover: Truly Yours, Dan Rice. The bottom edge of the covers and spine show signs of light water damage which has not affected the text. 501 numbered pages plus many illustrations including a frontispiece portrait of Dan Rice. Pages a little yellowed, almost no foxing. Overall the volume is in very good condition. A previous owner has pasted a small clipping to the top of the Preface page which begins: "Dan Rice (1822-1900), the most famous clown in the history of the American circus, was a friend of most of the celebrated men of his time, made and lost several fortunes, ran for Congress and was even considered as a presidential candidate." Interleaved on the same page is a newspaper clipping dated April 9, 1936, reporting the death of Dan Rice Jr., son of the clown, in San Francisco. Signature of a previous owner on the front flyleaf: Arthur E. Thorpe. There have been other biographies of Dan Rice in the twentieth century, but this must be the first and is quite rare. Priced accordingly. Bookseller Inventory # 1347
