First edition. Pebbled dark green cloth ornately stamped in gilt; 399 pps. Illustrated with engraved plates. Running title: ".Giving a Complete History of the Inhuman and Barbarous Treatment of Our Brave Soldiers by Rebel Authorities, Inflicting Terrible Suffering and Frightful Mortality, Principally at Andersonville, Ga., and Florence, S.C., Describing Plans of Escape, Arrival Prisoners, with Numerous and Varied Incidents and Anecdotes of Prison Life." The author was a Sergeant-Major of the 18th Connecticut Vols and prepared this book from a daily journal that he kept. A tight copy gilt somewhat rubbed and with a few wear spots and minor spotting to the cloth at the top and bottom spine edges; scattered foxing throughout, especially to the endpapers and prelims, two areas of tidemarking at the outer edges of the endpapers and first couple of leaves.
