About this Item

1979 5th ed. 448pp. illus. burgundy cloth sm 8vo w/gilt titles: near Fine/not issued in dj [ink gift inscription on ffep; hint of foxing to top & fore edges; else a nice clean & crisp copy] A useful facsimile reproduction of a classic woman’s memoir of the Civil War by Mary Ann Harris Gay (1829-1918), a prominent lady of Decatur, Georgia, which was originally published in 1897. According to the organization Georgia Women of Achievement, Inc., Margaret Mitchell made use of Mary Gay’s memoir in writing “Gone With the Wind” and Mark Twain made fun of her “flowery poetry” in “Tom Sawyer.” The City of Decatur lies six miles due east of the heart of Atlanta and is a generation older. Mary Gay’s house still exists as a historic site in Decatur, having been moved a few blocks from its original downtown lot. It was shelled by Union artillery in July 1864. This 1979 reissue of Mary Gay’s memoir was the first reprint since 1901. Listed in Civil War historian Richard Barksdale Harwell’s (1915-88) “In Tall Cotton: The 200 Most Important Confederate Books for the Reader, Researcher and Collector.”. Bookseller Inventory # 19625
