Ink signature at top of title page appears to be that of J. Y. Simpson (James Young Simpson, 1811-1870, was the first physician to demonstrate the anaesthetic properties of chloroform on humans). Library ink stamps to text block edges. Marks in margins of pp. 8-9 and some spots elsewhere. Written by his friend, the physician John Baron (1786 1851), this laudatory biography of the 'father of immunology' (1749-1823) did much to enhance Jenner's reputation. The work covers Jenner's personal and professional life both before and after his development of the vaccine for smallpox, as well as touching on the vaccine's reception and use around the world.
