A comprehensive and thoughtful biography by the general's son, who served on his staff and later became one of Jefferson Davis's most trusted staff members, charged with reporting to Davis on various battles. In this capacity he was present at numerous engagements. Albert Sydney Johnston served under three flags during his military career--as an officer of the United States Infantry, a private for the Republic of Texas, and a full general in the Confederate army. At the outbreak of the war he was considered the finest field commander on either side. Johnston's untimely death, while his army was on the brink of a crushing victory over Grant and Sherman at Shiloh, signaled the beginning of the end for Confederate hopes in the West. His death elicited the following from Jefferson Davis: "Without doing injustice to the living, it may safely be said that our loss is irreparable.". Bookseller Inventory # 69419
