Mylar protected green cloth boards with decorative cover and gilt lettering on cover and spine / no dj. Clean bright boards with light rubbing, beginning of shelf wear at t&b spine and bumped corners. Prev owner's name on fep, all pages toning with sporadic light soiling but otherwise clean and unmarked. This 2nd ed includes four chapters not incl in either the 336p or the 338p 1st ed's. Pp 352, frontis, illus's, photo's, adv's. The author, a newspaper man in Lawrence, provides a detailed account of Lane's campaign for Fremont, the military defense of Kansas in 1856, his election to U.S. Senate, and first hand accounts of the Wakarusa War, Jenkin's suicide, Quantrill's raid and Gen Price's raid. Lane was a colorful character who also lead a secret society of jayhawkers called the danites to avenge border attrocities before the outbreak of the Civil War and organized a group of 100 armed Kansans in Washington D.C. to protect President Lincoln from a planned assassination attempt until Union troops could return to secure the capital .
