Johnston served as a private in the Republic of Texas army, later he served as a US officer in the expedition against the Mormans. He was still in the US Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. Johnston was made a full general in the Confederate Army and was killed at Shiloh, the highest ranking officer on either side killed in the war. Good copy of the hardback book. Hinges starting and the gilt lettering on the spine is faded. This copy is inscribed "Dr T.J.
