Manuscript ownership of Roger Sherman Baldwin, 1883. Simeon Baldwin (1761-1851) was son-in-law of Roger Sherman (patriot of the Revolutionary and Constitutional era), and father of Roger Sherman Baldwin (1793-1863) an American politician who served as the 32nd Governor of Connecticut from 1844 to 1846 and a United States Senator from 1847 to 1851. As a lawyer, R.S. was most notable for his participation in the 1841 Amistad case. Plates beginning to brown. Front hinge cracked. 180 mm. Original green cloth binding embossed in blind. Front board decorated with a scene in gilt of two of Washington's soldiers crossing the Delaware. Spine decorated and lettered in gilt. Head and tail of spine worn with slight loss.
