First edition. Hardcover in midnight green cloth lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. 365 pp. Illustrated with photographic plates. Inscribed on the dedication page by Richard G. Conried, son of Heinrich Conried). A tight example, gilt lettering bright, very faint evidence of moisture bottom edge of the front board. Heinrich Conried (d. 1909) was the dircetor of the Metropolitan Opera 1903-1908 during which time he produced the first performance of Wagner's "Parsifal" outside Bayreuth (despite an unsuccessful lawsuit by Cosima Wagner). He also persuaded Enrico Caruso to come to the Met and perform in America for the first time. Bookseller Inventory # GE18285
