About this Item

This is the 1860 original printing, NOT a modern re-issue. The blind embossed cloth binding is worn (three inch split bottom of front outer hinge, five inch split top of rear outer hinge). The pages are tight and clean with no marks. There is foxing to the early pages. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Rev. Gruber. No name of previous owner. [In 1819 Rev. Gruber was arrested in Hagerstown, Maryland for inciting a race riot for preaching against slavery. This abolitionist minister was defended by none other than Roger B. Taney, arguing that the arrest violated Gruber's first amendment's freedom of speech protections. Taney would do a complete reversal later in the Dred Scott decision.].
