Reynolds, 1848. 18mo., original black publisher's cloth stamped in blind and gold. Pp.107, (1), 36. Wood-engraved frontispiece. Spine worn and top cover detached, but otherwise a very good copy. Name in ink of Benjamin Hale and Sarah Douglass. Reprint of the original 1838 edition. See Sabin #38079. Timothy Dexter (1747-1806) was an American merchant and eccentric who was one of the more colorful characters of his time. A leather dresser by trade, he gained a fortune after the American Revolution by buying up depreciated American currency which was afterwards reclaimed at full value. He was styled 'Lord Timothy Dexter' by his friends, and he accepted and relished the title. Bookseller Inventory # 4618
