About this title

Synopsis:

Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky (1893 - 1930) was a Russian Soviet poet, playwright, artist and stage and film actor. This book is of major importance as the first biography of Mayakovsky, the great Russian writer regarded as the poet of the Revolution. The product of five years of research among previously unpublished documents in the Soviet Union, THE LIFE OF MAYAKOVSKY is a dramatic and moving story of a tormented genius whose hatred of all restraint came into conflict with his dedication to the State and drove him to a tragic suicide at the age of 36. Every phase of Mayakovsky's stormy life is portrayed - his literary and political involvements; his association with the beginnings of Futurism; his role in the post-Revolution theater and cinema; his travels and poetry readings throughout Europe and America; and his often tragic relationships with some of the most exciting women of the time. Each event is described by the poet himself or by eye-witnesses, in a brilliant collage of documentary resources that makes for almost unbearable excitement. Many photographs and illustrations - some never seen before in the West - and an extensive index make the book all the more valuable. Through it all, the reader learns to understand not only Mayakovsky, but the surging ferment that was the strength of the Soviet Union in its early days.
