About this Item

Rebound in reddish-brown buckram; interior very good, with a few light fold lines and a faint stain affecting the first few pages. The author's name has been filled in on the title page. First English edition. Written during the early years of the Mexican Independence, this work "is probably the most important record of the social life of the country at that time" (Hill). Scottish born Madame Calderon de la Barca (1804-1882), née Inglis, met and married a Spanish diplomat while she was living in Boston. "On a special mission to Mexico she accompanied her husband and, due to her position, was able to become intimately acquainted with Mexican society and had access to any information she sought" (Hill). This work includes a preface by the eminent historian William H. Prescott, who encouraged the author to publish the present work. Bookseller Inventory # 15013
