First edition in English translation. INSCRIBED AND DATED 1940 IN INK IN GERMAN BY GRAF ON THE HALF TITLE PAGE. Hardcover in light blue cloth. 583 pp. A tight, internally clean example, spine strip sunned and spotted. Graf's "autobiographical novel" Part One of which was written in Brunn, Czecholslovakia in 1938 and Part Two of which was written in New York City and Saratoga Springs during the sping and summer of 1940. Graf, an avowed socialist and anarchist, had been asked byh Josef Goebbles in the early days of Nazi rule to become his official Nazi novelist; Graf declined what he termed "this disgrace" saying he preferred that Goebbles burned all his books instead. He left Germany and wandered Europe for the remainder of the 1930s and came to America in 1940. Bookseller Inventory # E17379
