About this Item

Original Wraps. Very Good. First Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Two volumes, extremely rare in the original, as-issued, publisher's boards. Portrait of Nelson by Hopwood as the frontispiece of volume one, the handwriting facsimile plate as the frontispiece for volume two. Page 258 in the second volume transposed to 852, indicating the uncorrected first printing. The condition is miraculous for a paperbound book just under 200 years old. Corners are bumped and all the edges are mildly rubbed. Top inch of hinge on the front cover of vol. 1 is started but all other hinges are intact and functional. Spine is done in a slightly different shade of gray paper than the panels and is intact at the head and tail where damage usually occurs. The white paper title labels are still clean, bright and unchipped. At the upper right hand corner of both front covers, written in an early nineteenth century hand, is the name Richard Fisher and beneath that, the place name Strand. As this is black ink on dark gray paper, it is not obtrusive. Internally, text blocks are clean, with only the very slightest foxing to a very few leaves. In vol. 2 there is a faint damp staining/tidemark at the top 1 inch of twenty or so pages following page 249, fading towards invisibility by page 271 and does not intrude upon text. In vol. 1 the portrait of Nelson opposite the title page has a damp stained area about the size of a silver dollar that stops just shy of Nelson's engraved name, and does not come close to intruding upon the portrait itself. On page opening 242-243 of vol. 2, a former owner commented upon the text dealing with Lady Hamilton and possibly also lightly tipped in a contemporary periodical clipping addressing the same subject to the right margin of p. 242, not obscuring the text. A wonderful copy of an important classic of English prose which Sir Humphrey David called "an immortal monument raised by genius to valour.". Bookseller Inventory # 001466
