About this title

From Library Journal:

In the 1950s, Garfield, an upper middle-class, slightly overweight, Jewish teenager from Long Island, became anorexic and then ballooned to well over 200 pounds. When psychotherapy failed to help her understand her eating problems, she turned to a "diet doctor" who gave her Dexedrine and tried to seduce her. In college, her reliance on Dexedrine increased, and she realized that she was addicted to the drug. Eventually, her condition became so bad that she had to enter a psychiatric hospital. Now happily married, with three children, Garfield tells her nightmarish story vividly, if not with all the insight one might wish. Still, general readers may identify with this all-too-real girl with her all-too-common problems, and public libraries should consider. Marica G. Fuchs, Guilford Free Lib., Ct.
