Description:

SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Cushing. The inscription, on the front endpaper of Volume I, is to Henry Keutmann, and is contemporary (1928) and located "PBBH" (Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, now Brigham and Women's, where Cushing was Surgeon-in-Chief). Two volumes; xvii + 685, xii + 728. Volume I is first edition, fourth impression; very good+ condition, clean, bright and tightly bound. volume 2 is first edition, second impression, in good+ condition with some wear to joints and corners and bubbling of cloth. Sir William Osler has been called the "Father of Modern Medicine." Canadian by birth, he served as a physician at McGill University, the University of Pennsylvania, as the physician in chief at Johns Hopkins University and at Oxford. He introduced the modern system of hands-on medical clerkships and residencies and authored several notable textbooks including the Principles and Practice of Medicine, now in its 23rd edition. Osler was also a noted bibliophile, and his collection forms the core of McGill University's collection in the history of medicine. Harvey Cushing was the "father of modern neurosurgery," discoverer of Cushing’s syndrome, and a pioneer of surgical technique. A friend of Osler from his days as a resident at Johns Hopkins, Cushing was also a fitting biographer, as a bibliophile with diverse interests in the history of medicine. For this work, he was awarded the 1925 Pulitzer Prize for biography. He died in 1939 while writing a monograph on the 16th century anatomist Andreas Vesalius. Bookseller Inventory # 005038
