About this Item

(JEFFERSON, THOMAS). TUCKER, George. The Life of Thomas Jefferson, Third President of the United States. With Parts of His Correspondence Never before Published, and Notices of His Opinions on Questions of Civil Government, National Policy, and Constitutional Law. Phila.: Carey, Lea, & Blanchard, 1837. 1st ed. 2 vols. [4],[ix]-x,[2],[xi]-[xviii],[xiii]- xx,[9],-545;[2],viii.[9],-525[1,err ata]pp. Portrait frontis. Contemporary sheep, gilt-ruled spine, black morocco spine labels. Ex-library, several stamps, spine labels removed, minor edge wear, some toning, else a very good copy. HOWES T-380. The first serious biography of Jefferson, written with the approval of James Madison. The Edinburgh Review wrote: " valuable addition to the stock of our political and historical knowledge. In it, Professor Tucker does not always accord with the illustrious subject of his biography. The work, indeed, manifests a laudable desire to do justice, and to decide impartially on contested topics; and hence, perhaps, it failed to give satisfaction to the ardent supporters, as well as to the bitter opponents, of Mr. Jefferson.".
