About this Item

JAMISON, D[avid] F. The Life and Times of Bertrand du Guesclin: A History of the Fourteenth Century. 2 Vols. Charleston: John Russell, 1864. 1st ed. 2 Vols. xvi, 287; viii, 314 pp. Portrait frontis. Orig. decorated cloth. Foot of spines beginning to show wear, corner of Vol. One bumped, else a near fine set. P & W 5519. One of the most interesting works produced in the Confederacy. Jamison, who served as president of the South Carolina Secession Convention, began this work in the mid-1850s and was not able to complete it until 1863. He sent the manuscript via a blockade runner to London, hoping it could be produced in a more handsome manner than could be done in the Confederacy. A year later the work returned through the blockade bearing the imprint John russell of Charleston. Bookseller Inventory # 51510
