About this Item

Signed by Author Brattleboro, 1922. 8vo, quarter cloth over paper, 360 pp. Privately printed for the author by E.L. Hildreth and Company. A scarce biography of William Henry Hunt (1823 - 1884), U.S. secretary of the Navy, diplomat and jurist. Inscribed and signed by Thomas Hunt on the preliminary page. The primary source for information on Hunt's life. With illustrations after photographs and old prints. A very good plus copy with slightest foxing and shelfwear. "As a distinguished but "loyal" white southerner, Hunt again became a candidate for federal preferment following the Republican victory in the election of 1880. He was initially considered for postmaster general or secretary of the interior, but the process of placing a southerner in James Garfield's cabinet was greatly complicated by the competition of the "Stalwart" and "Half-Breed" factions for supremacy in the party. When the smoke finally cleared, Hunt had been appointed secretary of the navy. By no means the most obvious choice for the post, Hunt nevertheless proved a dedicated and skilled secretary." -ANB.
