Book Description 1905. Dixon, Thomas, Jr. THE LIFE WORTH LIVING. A Personal Experience. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1905. 140p, decorated cloth, illus, covers slightly soiled, small name stamp on fly leaf, front free endpaper appears stuck to pastedown (doesn't affect functioning of book), good. 1st edition. Disillusioned with life in NYC, Dixon (1864-1946) and his family moved to Tidewater, Virginia. Dixon was a lawyer, legislator, Baptist minister, novelist, and an unreconstructed Southerner whose novel "The Clansman" (1905) became the motion picture "The Birth of a Nation", which led to the revival of the Ku Klux Klan. Book Description Doubleday Page, 1905. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Handsome copy of the First Edition of this memoir of an idyllic childhood in the Tidewater region of Virginia in late 19th century by the author of the "The Clansman," the novel to sympathetic to the early Ku Klux Klan that was the basis of D.W. Griffith's film "The Birth of a Nation." Dixon celebrates the rural life of his boyhood in evocative detail, although his descriptions of African Americans in the region are racist stereotypes by contemporary standards. He also compares the urban life he would know as adult in New York City very unfavorably with his boyhood memories -- branding it a "crime" to raise a child in New York. Green cloth with gilt titles, 140 pages, vintage photographs. A fresh with minimal sign of use except that a blank front endpaper has been removed at front. Seller Inventory # 010069
