About this title

Synopsis:

See what visitors don't get to see when they visit a zoo: the animals as individuals through Natalie Boog's delightful and quirky photographs and Catharine Retter's first hand stories. They take you up close and personal, revealing each animal's funny foibles, favourite habits, emotional needs, life history and behind-the-scenes stories told by their keepers.

You will meet 50 animal personalities including:
Parum, a kangaroo that lives in trees, can walk along a vine and builds a nest high in the trees.
Amira the white rhino who loves head butting contests with her best friend, Gertie the goat.
Kluet, the Peter Pan of animals who will never quite grow up while there is a dominant male orang-utan within hearing, but who loves his seductive best friend, Willow-the-Pillow.
Suzy the hippo, a bellyflopping killer ballerina.
Zarafa the baby giraffe who stayed up past her bedtime to watch the city's bright lights.
Lulu, a chimpanzee who wore tutus, rollerskated and raged in a previous life, had to learn how to be a chimp, and has now become a respected elder in her chimp community.

Introduced by Bradley Trevor Greive, best selling author of the little Blue Day book series

About the Author:

Catharine Retter is the author of six non-fiction books and has a continuing fascination with the interaction and bonds between people and animals. She often admired Natalie Boog's animal photographs in the major daily newspapers and weekend magazines and, when they met in person, they both knew they wanted to create a book together that would reveal more than words or photographs alone could do.

For Natalie Boog, no experience has had such an impact on her as this book, and she quickly realised that the animals watch the passing parade of zoo visitors just as much as we visitors watch the animals. The female chimps are fascinated by human babies. The bears let it be known if look at them for too long. The mother of the snow leopard cubs watched very warily as her cubs sniffed Natalie s camera. And the sea lion just wanted to play with the camera straps floating in the water.
