New Edition. x, 314 p.; 20 cm. Contemporary full polished calf; leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title. Third compartment has gilt-tooled "First Series"; gilt-tooled decoration in remaining compartments. Gilt-tooled banner on front board with motto "Beati Mundo Corde." Both boards ahve gilt-tooled borders and edges. All page edges marbled; marbled endpapers. A number of the essays in this volume relate to the author's primary field of study, astronomy, but he also writes about the role of coal in industrial development; the tunnel through Mount Cenis, Switzerland; the increasing range of artillery; the influence of marriage on lifespan; and the rowing styles of Oxford and Cambridge oarsmen. In Very Good Condition: rubbed with minor loss at head of spine; front board scraped above lower edge, probably someone removing a former owner's name; loss of gilt on spine from series title and decoration in lower compartments; ding in fore-edge of back board; clean and tight.
