About this title

Synopsis:

Meet Anastasia, a very special candle. Anastasia, along with St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church became a symbol of hope and light after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Anastasia's journey begins in the year 1919, as she travels to New York City and finds a home in the church. She shares with the reader, daily events and special moments she and her family become a part of over the years. Through the beautifully illustrated pages, her courageous journey comes to life. The book tells her story through the events of September 11, 2001 up until the historic rebuild of The St. Nicholas National Shrine. Anastasia holds hope for a brighter future not only for her home in New York City, but for the world.

About the Author:

As a native New Yorker, Kaitlyn Guttridge grew up in Westchester County, New York and was raised in the Greek Orthodox faith.  Throughout her childhood and early adult years, she spent a large portion of her time in New York City.  She enjoyed taking the local metro line into Grand Central and exploring all the city had to offer. Miss Guttridge was inspired to write this book after going to the 9/11 memorial and museum.  After seeing very few children's picture books about 9/11 and seeing absolutely none about St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Miss Guttridge decided to write her own.  As an elementary school teacher at a local South Carolina school, she is a firm believer in using books to discuss sensitive subjects with children.  Therefore, her hope for this book is that it will be used as a tool for parents and teachers to teach and talk to children about the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and the hope for a  better future.
