About this title

Synopsis:

They've seen pirates and Indians, Spanish and English. Forts, ports, rivers and reefs all needed them to safely guide ships to them or around them. The lighthouses of Florida were subject to bounding by hurricanes and storms from the sea. The soft sands and shifting islands could not, in some cases, support the weight of the traditional masonry and brick towers. Lighthouse builders eventually developed skeleton towers with iron pilings that offered less resistance to wind and waves. There are 30 lighthouses in Florida that are still standing, and 3 in Alabama. All are pictured in this book in color photographs, with a bit of history about each.
