About this Item

Small 4to. Brown cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xiv, 392pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Near fine/very good. Light jacket edgewear and touch of rubbing. A tight and quite handsome first edition with truly one of the loveliest of all dust jackets on any Lincoln book -- and with a fine autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from Townsend, 1p, 7" X 10", Lexington, KY, 10 June 1955. Addressed to Joseph L. Eisendrath, a noted Chicago Civil War collector and among the founders of the Chicago Civil War Round Table, the first in the country. On his personal letterhead, Townsend thanks his friend "for the wonderful birthday greetings which came to me so surprisingly in your own voice. I appreciate it deeply and I hope it will not be too long before I have an opportunity to thank you personally." Of the group that Eisendrath, Ralph G. Newman and others founded near the tail end of World War Two, he notes, "I know that you and the other Chicago boys must have had a great time at Fredericksburg and I was sorry indeed that circumstances prevented Winston Coleman and me from participating in the tour." Signed simply "Bill" in blue ink. Laid in is a pristine 16mo promotional leaflet for the Civil War Book Club edition of this book (which this copy isn't). Townsend (1890-1964) was a noted Lexington attorney better known as a renowned Lincoln authority. EICHER 903. Bookseller Inventory # 41220
