Book Description Simon and Schuster, 2012. Hardcover. Book Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Signed First Edition, First Printing of this definitive biography of William Seward, Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of State and one of the leading figures in American politics in the mid 19th Century. One of the pre-eminent Republicans of the pre Civil War era, the powerful New Yorker was bested by Lincoln for the 1860 presidential nomination, then became Lincoln's closest confidant during the Civil War. After surviving an assassination attempt in the plot that felled the President, Seward went on to make the most unfairly mocked decision in American history -- his famous "folly" in buying Alaska from Russia for geopolitical pocket change. Book Description None Stated, 1922. Book Condition: Very Good. Signed N.p., circa 1922. Small broadside, measuring 10.5 x 9, in a painted wooden frame. Signed boldly by Markham under his photograph: "Your Friend / Edwin Markham'". An uncommon edition, printed with Markham's photograph opposite his poem. Presumably printed for the 1922 unveiling of the Lincoln Memorial, though the copyright date is 1919. Some tape residue at edges and small holes, probably from tacks, otherwise bright and well preserved. Very good minus overall, attractive. "On the strength of his first book, Markham received a request to write a poem commemorating Abraham Lincoln's birthday in 1900. He first read "Lincoln, the Man of the People" in New York before the celebration, and once again the newspapers picked it up and spread it across the nation. The poem was again well received, both in print and when Markham read it at the birthday ceremonies; he read it publicly again in 1922 at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial." - Oxford DNB.
