Book Description The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis, 1929. Hardcover. 8vo. Red cloth. viii, 402pp. Frontispiece, illustratons. Very good. Tight and attractive first edition. Tipped to an inner flyleaf is the return address portion of a manila envelope, 5¼" X 2 3/4", with Townsend's name and Lexington business address penned in blue ink, with stamps and partial postal cancellation -- not clearly in Townsend's hand and likely secretarial. Front flyleaf also bears an intriguing penned inscription: "To Hon. H.A. Bailey, / Student of & Speaker on Lincoln. / from T.S.D. / April 7, 1934." And pencilled beneath this the even stranger elaboration "morning after seeing 'David Harum' picture (Will Rogers)." H.A. Bailey, especially with the honorific, may have been Vermont politician Henry Albon Bailey (1893-1961), a state senator, state representative and mayor -- but the identity of "T.S.D." remains unknown. Perhaps a Lincoln scholar?. Bookseller Inventory # 41206
