Hardcover octavo in textured tan paper-covered boards with matching endpapers; 8 pp., with three-page facsimile of Lincoln's letter of condolence to the parents of Colonel Ellsworth, frontispiece contact photographic print portrait of Lincoln from the original glass plate negative (Meserve Collection No. 35) and another contact photographic print of E. Elmer Ellsworth by Matthew Brady from the Meserve Collection. Some chipping and narrow loss along the spine and light rubbing to the corners; slight offsetting to the title page from the Lincoln photographic frontispiece. A friend of Abraham Lincoln, Ephraim Elmer Ellsworth was shot on May 24, 1861 by the proprietor of an Alexandria, Virginia hotel after Ellsworth tore the Confederate flag from the top of the building.
