About this Item

Life by Joseph J. Lewis, annotated by Thomas I. Starr. Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, dust jacket. 63pp. Illustrations. Fine/fine. Text of Lincoln's August 27, 1856 speech, limited to 1000 copies. A superb, bright, handsome copy of this rather uncommon title -- and below the colophon leaf text, which notes "Of this book there have been designed by Paul McPharlin at the Blue Ox Press.," the noted book designer handsomely pens "Paul McPharlin for / Lone K. Wilchel" in bold green ink. McPharlin (1903-48) was a well-known Detroit book designer but better known as a pioneering puppeteer and puppet maker, husband of famed puppeteer Marjorie Batchelder McPharlin. Of the many copies of this title we've handled over the years, this is the first copy signed by McPharlin we've encountered. The identity of the recipient with the unusual name remains a mystery.
