About this Item

Issued to Commemorate the Opening of the Strandell Collection of Linnaeana at The Hunt Botanical Library, Carnegie-Mellon University. Pittsburgh, 1973. Large octavo, hardcover, cloth-backed marbled boards. [iv], 70, [2] pages, illustrated. Contains a sixteen-page facsimile: Orbis Eruditi Judicium by Linnaeus, originally published in 1741, printed letterpress on Barcham Green handmade paper, housed in a pocket at the back of the book. A fine copy. Contents include an introduction to the Life and Work of Linnaeus by Birger Strandell and a translation, with Notes, of the Orbis Eruditii Judicium, in which the young Linnaeus defends himself and the integrity of his work against the vicious slanders of jealous peers in Stockholm. At the time of this dedication, the Strandell Collection was the second most complete collection of primary materials on Linnaeus in the world. For secondary material it was unequaled.
