Synopsis: Inasmuch as the keeping of public vital records by town clerks in Vermont was not legislated until 1840, this collection of the records of pensioners and soldiers of Vermont in the War of 1812 partially makes up for this impediment. The volume begins with an alphabetically arranged series of abstracts of the evidence presented by the claimants to a pension agent, in most cases indicating the veteran's unit, dates and places of service, and relationship to the claimant. This is followed by lists of some 200 Vermonters who volunteered to serve at Plattsburgh. The Appendix to the book, consisting of yet other lists and various accounts of the conflict, sheds further light on the role of Vermonters.
