An early specialist in Cockney parts, he first found fame playing the buffoon in a double-act with Charles Mathews. Snub-nosed, red-cheeked and enormously broad-bottomed, Liston had only to appear on stage to set the audience laughing. He shrewdly chose costumes to accentuate his comic appearance and specialised in physical gags and easy humour. His most famous role, Paul Pry, in John Poole's comedy of that name, set the standard for every later performer of the part" (National Portrait Gallery).Liston's Paul Pry's Address To His Friends and Paul Pry In The Money Mark-It are here found in the Second Collection as well as Cruikshank's hand-colored etching, Mr. Liston As Paul Pry.William Hartmann Woodin (1868-1934) was one of the foremost book collectors of his era, a major American industrialist, and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury during the first year of President Franklin Roosevelt's first term. Pickford Robert Waller (1849-1930), an English designer and collector, was the son of a builder Robert John Waller and Harriet Shafto Pickford. Bookseller Inventory #
