About this Item

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, 1899. Octavo, original red buckram, stamped in indigo and gold, with top edge gilt and all others untrimmed. 227 pages, indexed and illustrated. Spine mildly sunned, but otherwise a fine, bright, unopened copy of the Fourth Edition. Part of a popular series of the time, written by a noted physician-surgeon who served in the Army of the Potomac and later established a lucrative practice in New Jersey, where he was police surgeon and also surgeon to the Pennsylvania Railroad. In the middle of this busy practice he managed to write many monographs on medical and surgical subjects. During his retirement years he made himself into a competent ethnologist, with valuable studies of the Lenape Indians to his credit. He also pursued his literary interests, personally travelling to the homes and haunts of some of his favorite authors, and publishing books on the subject that won a large audience and went through numerous editions. A large part of this work concerns literary haunts of Manhattan. Bookseller Inventory # 9816
