About this Item

Hardcover in glazed pictorial boards. No dust jacket. No statement of edition (1955). Poor condition. Boards are loose and have been repaired inside and out with tape, which is yellowing. The book is somewhat fragile. Former owner's name in ink on title page. Text and picture pages are clean, with full-page watercolor illustrations. Little Alexander, a six-year-old boy who does not want to start school the next day, runs away to Massa Brown's watermelon patch and eats one of Massa Brown's watermelons, even though he knows it is the wrong thing to do. He is so worried about escaping without being caught he dreams he is a bluejay able to fly up and away beyond the fence that is stymying his exit. But a rainstorm comes and the water helps him slide under Massa Brown's fence. Once home Little Alexander confesses to his Pappy, who puts his switch back on the shelf and dispenses forgiveness. A curious period piece. 4to. 31 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 345
