About this Item

Bound in brick cloth with titles and decorations in black, orange and gilt. Corresponding 1908 dates to the title and copyright pages, with "Published August, 1908" beneath the copyright. No additional printings. The story of an Englishman who gets involved in fighting the insurrectos in the Philippines during the the first decade of US occupation. Hyatt actually served with the US Army here, as did his brother, who was killed. The book has a markedly racist tone, but considering the era and the stultifying guerrilla warfare that took place, that is no surprise, although Hyatt himself expects criticism and says so in his introduction. The author spent his life in exploration and soldier of fortune work in Africa and the far East; he died at age 37 in 1914. The cloth shows mild edgewear with rubbing at the head and heel of the spine. The spine is faintly sunned. There is a slight separation at pages 240-241 (see photo). Hinges solid, binding square. A clean, unmarked copy. Uncommon, especially in the US edition. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 124971
