Book Description Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1943. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. ca 1943 - 1948. No additional printings listed. Early printing, with the left-facing flower on page 27, published by Reynal and thus printed prior to the 1948 merge with Harcourt; however, does not have the five-line colophon which appears in the first six printings. 91 pages. Tan boards with reddish brown titling and decoration to spine and front panel, very good +. Boards very lightly age-soiled in places, with mild wear to edges and lightly bumped spine tips and corners. Titling at spine is a little faded, and so leans a little more to the "brown" than the "reddish brown" lettering of the front panel. Spine square. Binding sound. Lacks dust jacket. Gift inscription dated 1952 written in pen on ffep. Text is clean and unmarked. Photographs available upon request. Bookseller Inventory # BBS-2007150

SAINT-EXUPERY, ANTOINE de; Translated from the French by KATHERINE WOODS

Book Description New York: Harcourt , Brace & World. [1943] 1960, Per FIRSTS Magazine, October 2003, 2003. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. Pictorial DJ has clipped front inside flap, top and bottom; dust soiled; small chips on corners and spine edges; closed tear on back top spine edge. Has the Following points with regard to Katherine Woods Translation: THE SHEEP TEST (p. 18): Katherine Woods made one very obvious mistake in her English translation. The error occurs in Chapter 4, in the sentence: Il était une fois un petit prince qui habitait une planète à peine plus grande que lui, et qui avait besoin d'un ami. The correct translation is (to use Irene Testot-Ferry's translation): 'Once upon a time there was a little prince who lived on a planet scarcely bigger than himself and who had need of a friend'. Katherine Woods translated this as 'Once upon a time there was a little prince who lived on a planet that was scarcely any bigger than himself, and who had need of a sheep.' To test if a translation is based on Katherine Woods' version, one rule of thumb is to check if it uses 'sheep' instead of 'friend'. THE TRUE STORIES TEST (p. 7): Another, less clear-cut test is found in Chapter 1, where the narrator refers to a book, Histoires Vécues. Vécu is the past participle of vivre 'to live', so this literally means 'Lived Stories', that is, stories that have actually been undergone or experienced. In more idiomatic English, this can be translated as 'Real-life Stories'. Irene Testot-Ferry translates it as 'True Stories'. Katherine Woods translates this book title as 'True Stories from Nature'. Since there's no reference to nature in the original French, it stands to reason that a Chinese translation including a word equivalent to 'nature' is based on Woods' English version. THE LOOK TEST (p. 79): At Chapter 25, there's a discussion about people not finding what they are 'looking for'. The little prince says: Mais les yeux sont aveugles. Il faut chercher avec le cur. This is translated by Woods as: 'But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart'. Bookseller Inventory # 469
