Wyeth was constantly referred to as an illustrator, a label he deeply resented, not because layman used it in referring to him, but because those in the art world looked down from their ivory towers and deprecated illustration as a second-rate art form.he once told a group of students who wanted to be illustrators so that they could make money and become artists -- `fine, but the only trouble is that you've got to be an artist before you become an illustrator." [This copy is one of the 500]. 8 ½ in. x 11 ¼ in., with signed limitation leaf, half-title; the frontispiece is a mounted color plate with a tissue guard (the lower right corner of the plate shows a tiny crease); title-page with printed device; mounted color plate title-page; dedication leaf; contents and list of illustrations; second half-title. [i]-[xii]; pp. [1]-322; illustrated with 14 tipped-in color plates, mounted on sheets, with printed titles and gold-printed borders on the sheets, around the plates, and the frontispiece and color-printed title-page, giving a total of 16 color plates. Vellum spine and sides, with the gilt title and device on the spine, gilt border along the vellum sides, with a dark blue/gray, textured cloth with a gold, crossed-line design, over boards; light blue/gray endpapers, top-edge gilt; with original glassine wraparound present, and the publisher's blue paper-covered box, with the printed and numbered title label mounted on the front cover of the box. The glassine (dustjacket) shows a few chips to the corners and some small cracks or splits; the box shows cracking to three of the edges/corners, which have been lightly re-pasted at some time, with some light masking tape marks present, from an early repair, and a small abrasion across one edge of the box, from a removed piece of tape. The box is in good condition (showing the early repairs, noted above; the glassine wraparound (dustjacket) is very good. The book itself is an extremely fine copy, probably one of the finest that could be found today. A novel set in Kentucky during the Civil War era, with classic illustrations by N. C. Wyeth. The title of this novel lent its name to Kentucky's Kingdom Come State Park, in Cumberland. Weight: 4 lbs. Postage may be on this item. Signed by Illustrator(s). Seller Inventory # F-28
