First appearence of Peter Pan. Black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Exterior shows only light edge wear, a small damp bubble to spine, and some light fading to gilted top-edge of pages. Interior shows a gift inscription and signature to front end paper, light browning to page edges and end papers, and a very minimal amount of foxing to first and last few pages. Mai 1860 in Kirriemuir in der Grafschaft Angus in Schottland als neuntes Kind eines Handwebers geboren. Seine Kindheit war vom Tod eines älteren Bruders überschattet, der beim Eislaufen ertrank. Der sechsjährige James versuchte seitdem, dem Bruder, der nie erwachsen wurde, ähnlich zu werden, um seine Mutter zu trösten. Er besuchte die Schule in Dumfries und begann nach dem Abschluß an der Universität Edinburgh 1882 zuerst als Journalist zu arbeiten. Seine literarischen Anfänge gehören in den Rahmen der 'Kailyard School', einer Autorengruppe, deren Name den Kohlkopf der Armen als Kennzeichnung ihrer meist rührseligen Dorfgeschichten über die Bräuche der ländlichen Heimat trägt. Barrie hatte mit Erzählungen wie 'A Window in Thrums' bald so großen Erfolg, daß er von Schottland ins Zentrum des literarischen Lebens nach London zog und dort 1894 die Schauspielerin Mary Ansell heiratete. In Kensington Gardens begegnete der von Kindern begeisterte Barrie 1897 zwei kleinen Brüdern, denen er Geschichten erzählte. Als er bald darauf auch deren Eltern kennenlernte, wurde er zum Hausfreund der Familie. Die bevorstehende Geburt eines dritten Kindes ließ Barrie für die Brüder die Geschichte von einem Baby erfinden, das nicht weiß, ob es ein Vogel oder ein Kind ist. Die englische Version vom 'Klapperstorch' läßt die kleinen Kinder als Vögel zur Welt kommen, die den Eltern ins Haus gebracht werden. Mit Peter Pan, der aus dem Haus seiner Mutter im Nachthemd zurück zur Vogelinsel fliegt, war 1902 der Umriß einer Figur entstanden, die zu literarischem Weltruhm gelangen sollte. Der Ur-Peter-Pan lebt als poetisches 'Zwischendrinding' mit seiner Flöte in der phantastischen Welt der Elfen, in der es keine Zeit gibt und Peters Musik die Natur verzaubert. Für die heranwachsenden Jungen entwickelte Barrie den Stoff weiter und führt seinen robuster gewordenen Helden zu den Abenteuern von drei Kindern mit Captain Hook und der Elfe Tinkerbell im Neverland. Die dramatisierte Version von 1904 wurde als 'Peter Pan or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up' ein Kassenerfolg zu Weihnachten im Theater, 1906 und 1911 folgten weitere Versionen als Erzählung. Zwar war Barrie am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts vor allem als Autor von mehr als dreißig gefühlvollen Komödien wie 'What Every Woman Knows' (1908) oder 'The Twelve-Pound Look' (1910) bekannt und berühmt, doch heute sind diese Stücke mit ihren Figuren der damaligen Gesellschaft weitgehend vergessen. Peter Pan dagegen eroberte sich nach langen Jahren ungebrochenen Erfolgs auf der Londoner Bühne schließlich mit Walt Disney den Film und auf diesem Wege die Herzen der Kinder in aller Welt. 112 pp. Englisch, Deutsch.
